Many people begin their healing journey feeling disconnected from their bodies. They may be living with chronic stress, anxiety, fatigue, or illness and feel like they have been pushing through for years. At some point, symptoms stop feeling random and start feeling like messages.
In my work as a healing coach in Burlington, I often meet people at that moment. They are not just looking to “fix” a symptom. They are trying to understand what their body has been trying to say.
Listening to yourself can feel unfamiliar, even uncomfortable. In a culture that rewards productivity, compliance, and staying busy, turning inward can feel like stepping outside what is considered normal. But for many people, that step becomes an important part of healing.
When “Normal” Doesn’t Feel Right Anymore
Modern life often asks us to override our own signals. We ignore fatigue, push past stress, suppress emotions, and adapt to demands that leave little room for rest or reflection. Over time, this can take a toll on the nervous system and the body.
What we call “normal” in society often includes chronic stress, emotional suppression, and disconnection from ourselves. These patterns can contribute to tension, burnout, anxiety, and physical symptoms that seem to appear without a clear cause.
In his book The Myth of Normal, Gabor Maté explores how these cultural patterns affect our health. My own story was included not because I followed the expected path, but because I learned how important it was to reconnect with my inner experience during a time of serious illness. I began paying closer attention to my emotional world, my stress responses, and my sense of safety in my own body. That experience deeply shaped how I now support others.
What Happens When We Stop Listening to Ourselves
When we consistently override our inner signals, the body often finds other ways to get our attention. This can show up as:
- Persistent fatigue
- Muscle tension or pain
- Digestive issues
- Anxiety or a sense of being “on edge”
- Feeling disconnected, numb, or overwhelmed
These symptoms are not personal failures. They are often signs that the nervous system has been under long-term stress and needs support to feel safe again.
Healing is not just about eliminating symptoms. It often involves rebuilding a relationship with your body so that its signals feel understandable rather than frightening or inconvenient.
Why Inner Safety Matters in Healing
The nervous system plays a central role in how we heal. When we feel constantly pressured, judged, or unsafe, the body stays in survival mode. In that state, it is much harder to rest, repair, and regulate.
Creating a sense of inner safety can involve:
- Learning to notice and name your internal experiences
- Slowing down enough to recognize stress signals
- Exploring emotions that may have been pushed aside
- Building practices that help the body shift out of fight-or-flight
This work is not about blaming yourself for illness or suggesting that symptoms are “all in your head.” It is about understanding that the body and mind are deeply connected, and that feeling safer in yourself can support your overall healing process.
How Somatic and Vibrational Coaching Can Support You
As a Somatic and Vibrational Healing Coach at EMPACT Wellness, I support clients in exploring the emotional, nervous system, and identity aspects of healing.
In our sessions, we may focus on:
- Reconnecting with body awareness
- Understanding stress and nervous system patterns
- Exploring personal boundaries, needs, and self-trust
- Creating a greater sense of internal safety and alignment
Many people find that when they feel more connected to themselves, their healing journey feels less like a battle and more like a process they can participate in with awareness and compassion.
Methods We Use in Our Coaching Sessions
Each session is guided by your goals, your comfort level, and what feels supportive for your nervous system. My approach blends body-based awareness, mindfulness practices, and gentle inner exploration to help you reconnect with yourself in a grounded way.
Some of the methods I may draw from include:
Somatic grounding
This involves paying attention to physical sensations in the body, like breath, tension, or posture. Learning to notice these signals can help you feel more present and support the nervous system in shifting out of stress and into a calmer state.
Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR)-informed practices
These are simple, practical tools that help you become more aware of thoughts, emotions, and stress patterns without judgment. Over time, mindfulness can support emotional regulation and a greater sense of steadiness.
Hypnosis and subconscious re-patterning
In a relaxed, focused state, we can explore patterns or beliefs that may be operating beneath conscious awareness. This process is collaborative and gentle, and is designed to help you shift limiting patterns and strengthen supportive ones.
Energy-based coherence work
Some sessions may include practices that focus on helping you feel more balanced and aligned in your body and emotional state. Many clients experience this as a sense of calm, clarity, or inner settling.
Quantum-inspired approaches such as QHHT
These methods are used as reflective tools to help clients explore inner imagery, personal insight, and a deeper connection with their inner wisdom. Experiences vary from person to person, and the focus is always on personal meaning and integration.
Trusting Yourself Can Be Part of the Process
Choosing to listen inward can sometimes feel uncomfortable, especially if you are used to looking outside yourself for answers. It may even feel unfamiliar enough to seem unrealistic at first. Your body carries wisdom about your limits, your stress, and your needs.
If you have been told you are not normal, that you need to “face reality,” or that you are too sensitive, too unconventional, or too hopeful, consider this your invitation. The courage to trust yourself may look different from what others expect, but it can be an important part of coming back into alignment with who you really are.
